What is a portable hand washing station?
A portable hand washing station is a freestanding unit with two foot-pump sinks, soap dispensers and paper towel holders, so two people wash at once. It carries about 30 gallons of fresh water and a gray water tank, and it needs no hose or power.

Who needs a hand washing station?
Food stands at Minnesota special events must have hand washing with water, soap and paper towels; sanitizer alone does not count. OSHA also requires washing facilities for crews working with paints, coatings or harmful materials. Weddings and large parties add one so guests are not lining up at the house.
- Food vendors and food trucks: MDH special event food stand rules
- Concrete, masonry, roofing and painting crews: OSHA 1926.51(f)
- Farm field crews: 1 hand washing facility per 20 workers under OSHA 1928.110
How big is a hand washing station?
The two-sink hand washing station stands about 55 inches tall and takes a footprint about 3 by 3 feet. It holds about 30 gallons of fresh water, enough for roughly 500 hand washes. Long-term stations are refilled and restocked on the weekly service visit.
