Where should a porta potty go on a lake lot?
Place a porta potty on the flattest ground near the road or driveway, well back from the shoreline and your well, and within about 25 feet of where a pump truck can stop. On most lake lots that means near the road end of the lot, not down by the dock.
- Keep it well away from the water line and any well head.
- Avoid low spots where spring melt collects.
- Leave a lane the truck can use every week.
Do I need county approval?
A temporary portable toilet during construction is standard on lake lots. Shoreland rules for permanent structures and septic systems are handled by the county: in Douglas County that is Land & Resource Management, and in Otter Tail County the shoreland office. Ask them about setbacks if your lot is tight.

What if my lake lane is narrow or steep?
Narrow or steep lake lanes are common around the Alexandria Chain of Lakes. Send us a photo of the lane and where it ends. If the truck cannot turn around, we place the unit at the top of the lane on level ground and service it from there.
How often should a cabin unit be serviced?
A lake cabin unit used every day by a building crew needs weekly service. A weekend-only cabin with a few family members can often go every other week. Either way, service stays on a fixed day of the week, so you always know when the truck is coming and can leave the lane clear.
